Nation-State

A sovereign territorial state whose population is, or is treated as, a single nation — the default baseline for territorial governance that every other type in this table defines itself against. International law's classic test says a state should have a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states.

Governance Model
A government exercising authority over its territory and population, in forms that vary widely (republics, monarchies, federations, one-party states), so no single decision mechanism defines the type. A state's political existence does not depend on other states recognizing it.
Legal & Territorial Status
The only type here with sovereign legal personality in international law and recognized jurisdiction over a defined territory (one of the four qualifications above). States admitted to the United Nations are listed on its member-state roll.
Membership Basis
Citizenship, typically by birth (descent or birthplace) or by naturalization; it is not chosen the way membership in the other types is, and whether multiple citizenships are allowed depends on each state's own law.
Funding & Treasury
Taxation, backed by the state's monopoly on legitimate coercion, supplemented by borrowing and, for states that issue their own currency, monetary issuance.
Representative Examples
Every member state of the United Nations claims this form; how closely a single national identity coincides with the state varies widely.

En qué se diferencia

Unlike every other type here, a nation-state is the baseline the rest define themselves against: it holds recognized sovereignty over a defined territory and a permanent population, membership is by citizenship rather than choice, and it is funded by taxation. A Network State aims to become one, a Network Nation deliberately works alongside one, and a DAO, NAO, cDPO or DisCO makes no such claim.
