DisCO (Distributed Cooperative Organization)

A cooperative governance and economic model that tracks pro-bono commons work, paid ("livelihood") work and care work as three separate value streams — presented by its authors as a cooperative, commons-oriented, feminist-economics alternative to Decentralized Autonomous Organizations.

Governance Model
The default decision protocol is virtually identical to a traditional co-op's one-member-one-vote, with members' shares able to influence decisions in critical situations such as a blocked proposal; decisions and control are otherwise shared on the basis of contributions and peer review. Its authors foreground association over autonomy and federation over scale.
Legal & Territorial Status
No territorial ambition. A model a collective adopts rather than a legal form: its pilot, Guerrilla Translation (part of the Guerrilla Media Collective), is described as an Open Cooperative. No DisCO-specific legal wrapper was documented in the sources reviewed.
Membership Basis
Worker-members who each hold shares across the three work streams. Participation is opt-in and equipotential: anyone who joins as a member has their work valued and is expected to take part in decisions.
Funding & Treasury
Value created by the collective's productive work (for Guerrilla Translation: written and simultaneous translation, copyediting and subtitling) is converted to money through a market-facing agency, pooled, and paid out monthly according to each member's shares across the three streams.
Representative Examples
Guerrilla Translation / the Guerrilla Media Collective — the archetype the model was drawn from. No other operating DisCO was verified for this entry.

Em que se diferencia

Unlike a DAO — which its authors position it against as individualistic and techno-deterministic — a DisCO is organized around a cooperative's membership and three tracked work streams (pro-bono commons work, paid work, care work) rather than around code-enforced rules, though its authors see a role for distributed-ledger tools in its value accounting. Unlike a cDPO, whose defining feature is a tokenized, equity-like stake, a DisCO's documented core is share-based accounting of work inside a cooperative; the similar acronyms are a coincidence of naming, not a lineage.
