MyTerms

Identity Protocol

A machine-readable personal privacy terms standard based on IEEE 7012-2025 (Standard for Machine-Readable Personal Privacy Terms). Defines a set of standardized, machine-readable agreements that individuals can issue to data-collecting organizations, enabling transparent and equitable personal data exchange without surveillance, opaque tracking, or misuse. Provides five standardized agreement types for initial market deployment. Governed by the MyTerms Alliance, a global network advocating for IEEE 7012 implementation.

Domínios de Caso de Uso

Identity Protocol Atributos

Origins Personal data sovereignty / Privacy rights (motivated by the "broken" state of the internet — surveillance, spam, opaque data use — and the need for a sub-network of transparent, equitable data exchange without surveillance; IEEE P7012 working group initiated to create machine-readable standard)
Database N/A (standard defines term format, not storage architecture)
Query Language N/A (schema/vocabulary standard; no query interface)
Data Formats IEEE 7012-2025 machine-readable privacy terms format (structured personal privacy agreement schemas; five standardized agreement types)
Mobile Support N/A (standard specification; no dedicated mobile app)
Web Support N/A (standard specification; web-based implementations possible)
Native Apps N/A (standard specification; implementations by adopting parties)
Terms Free / Open standard (IEEE 7012-2025; donations requested for MyTerms Alliance)
Funds Unknown (donation-funded advocacy initiative; IEEE standards funding not separately disclosed)
Based On IEEE P7012 working group (precursor IEEE effort); personal data sovereignty principles; machine-readable consent frameworks
Permissions Consent-based (privacy terms define what data use is consented to; machine-readable consent is the permission model)
Authentication & Identity N/A (standard defines privacy term schemas; identity of parties is application-layer concern)
Storage Model N/A (standard does not specify storage; terms could be stored on-device, in personal data stores, or by agreement platform)
Interoperability IEEE ecosystem (any implementation of IEEE 7012-2025); intended to complement personal data stores, consent management platforms, and identity systems
Data Portability Full portability (machine-readable terms are portable by design; standardized format enables any conformant system to read/process)
Governance & Decision Making IEEE Standards Association (IEEE 7012-2025 published standard; MyTerms Alliance for promotion and advocacy; IEEE Industry Connections Effort for further development from June 2026)
Protocol Maturity / Standardization IEEE Standard (IEEE 7012-2025 published; five standardized agreement types released; IEEE Industry Connections Effort launching June 2026 for broader implementation roadmap)
Identity Standards Compatible with W3C VCs (privacy terms expressible as verifiable claims) and personal data sovereignty frameworks; IEEE 7012-2025
DID Methods Supported None defined by standard (DID-based identity for parties is application-layer; compatible with any DID method for party identification)
Key Management N/A (standard defines term format; key management for signing terms is application-layer)
Credential Types Privacy terms / Consent agreements (five standardized agreement types; machine-readable personal privacy terms as credentials between individual and organization)
Verification Method N/A (IEEE 7012-2025 defines the term schema; verification of party identity and agreement execution is application-layer)
Privacy Features Anti-surveillance by design (core purpose: transparent data exchange without surveillance or opaque tracking; standardized terms make data use explicit and machine-readable; consent model)
Authentication Methods N/A (standard does not define authentication; application-layer concern)
Revocation Mechanism N/A (standard defines term format; revocation of terms is application-layer)
Agent Types Supported Humans (individuals issuing terms to organizations); Organizations (receiving and processing terms)
Wallet/Client Types Unknown (no reference implementation identified; intended for integration into personal data stores and consent management tools)
Recovery Mechanisms N/A
Compliance / Regulations GDPR-aligned (designed for transparent, equitable personal data exchange consistent with GDPR principles; IEEE 7012 addresses the consent and transparency requirements of data protection law)
Credential Exchange Protocols Unknown / TBD (IEEE Industry Connections Effort from June 2026 expected to define exchange protocols)
Trust Framework Standardized terms (IEEE 7012-2025 defines the common format; trust established through standardized machine-readable agreement rather than cryptographic verification alone)
Cost Model Free (open IEEE standard; no per-use fees; donations to MyTerms Alliance voluntary)
Censorship Resistance N/A (standard defines term schema; censorship resistance depends on implementation platform)
